2005 APF Meets: Windy City Ironman - January - Niles, Illinois; Illinois State Bench Press Championships - March - Aurora

Sunday, March 13 - Supplemental

Meet results:

1st - 534.5 Good. Not an easy touch. Not a good transition to lockout.
2nd - 562 Good. Very well-executed. Fast and smooth.
3rd - 578.5 No Go. Very poorly-executed. Touched too low.

1st Place - 308 Submaster
Best Lifter - Open/Submaster
Heaviest bench of day one. Second heaviest bench of the meet.

Difference between night and day, 562 and 578.5, and the difference was entirely mental. The 562 is how I have to mentally approach a heavy attempt: relax, let the bar come down on its own. On 3rd, I was tense and tried to control the bar too much. As a result, it was moving too slow near touch and drifted too low. It barely moved an inch off my stomach after the "press" command.

Muscle-G: My upper back benefits alot from the lockout portion of stiff-leg deadlifts and of course rack lockouts. I also like to do heavy shrugs. I need to add a few lat exercises. For legs, deadlifts and rack squats. I'll pick up squatting again when I can. When I don't have a meet coming up soon I do leg presses. For shoulders, I have to be very careful about injuries, so I do shoulder rehab with very light dumbbells . . . less than 30 pounds. I do modified lateral raises, reverse grip laterals, front raises. For biceps, I do a couple sets of hammer curls. Heavy bicep work tends to irritate my elbows. I guess I sound like I'm kind of a wreck. Take care of your joints while you're young and you won't have to lift so carefully when you're my age.

Sunday, March 13 - Supplemental from George

John what exercises do you do for shoulders, arms, legs and upper back? I see you have strong chest, triceps, and lower back lol. Just curious of what you do for your other bodyparts.

Tuesday, March 8 - Bench Press

Last bench workout before the state meet.

Bench Press -
135x5
225x3

Shoulders, Triceps, Lots of Coaching, and home.

Surgery will be Wednesday the 16th.
Thursday, March 3 - Supplemental from Janne

That sounds like a good plan. You don't need to use the size 52. However, after the meet we will try, at some point, how much you can get out of that size 52 with twisted sleeves etc. Let's see how strong you feel after the first/second attempt. Maybe you should go for something ridiculous on the third.

535 seems like a solid opener. You've been hitting around that several times with no problem.

I think I've seem most of your 500+ lifts, so I would really like to be there to give you all the advice I can give. And I will be there, unless if I have to go to O'Hare at the same time you bench, which would kinda suck.

I guess I have to figure out my bench attempts this Sunday. Right now I have no idea. I don't even know which shirt(s) to use. For squat I have some ideas. Those will be tested tomorrow.

Thursday, March 3 - Supplemental

Any advice on attempts, Janne?

1st - 242.5/534.5
2nd - 252.5/556.5~255/562
3rd - 257.5/567.5~ Who Knows?

This would be all in the 50. I've been considering opening light in the 52, but it seems like alot of energy and time to switch shirts.

What do you think?

Thursday, March 3 - Supplemental from Janne

Don't mention it, John. Alotta people (including me) should be thanking you for creating such a nice team and training environment. Besides, you haven't reached your peak yet. I hope you could bench in Aurora and nail something ridiculous such as 600. I'm sure that would ease the mental pain at least a bit.

Wednesday, March 2 - Supplemental

I think Ernie completely redefined what the body is capable of doing in the later years of life.

By the way, these doctors I'm talking about are the ones who treated my left rotator and right AC separation in 2003. I email them from time to time with reports on my PRs and pictures from meets . . . just to rub it in.

Wednesday, March 2 - Supplemental from Eric

Tell your doctor that Ernie Frantz hit 820 in the squat (only 6 lbs off his all-time best) when he was 63 years old.

Wednesday, March 2 - Supplemental

One doctor said I should give up on benching . . . especially "at your age." Another said, "Maybe you could get back in the 300 range, but you'll have to be satisfied with that. Crazy benching . . . 500, 600 . . . is quite simply out of the question."

Wednesday, March 2 - Supplemental from David

What? Did they not believe you when you told them how much you were lifting?

Wednesday, March 2 - Supplemental from Jeff

Amazing John! You're on the verge of being a world-class pusher-puller.  Get those guts tucked in and we'll see an 800 dl and 650 bp from you in Reno.

Wednesday, March 2 - Supplemental

I plan on showing my record certificates to Drs. Pencilneck and Quicheater at Carle Sports Medicine.

I'll bring along a great Mexican recipe for Crow.

Tuesday, March 1 - Bench Press

BWT - 279.9

This was my final heavy workout before the state meet which I will still do bench-only in spite of the hernia. I didn't feel any discomfort from it while benching.

A huge thanks to Yuri, Janne, and Jeff for their help, advice, handoffs, and spots. Guys, I couldn't bench this heavy without you.

Bench Press -
135x5
225x3
275x1
315x1
F6 50 ON
405x1 3-Board
475x1 about 1 inch from touch
535x1 paused
555x1 paused w/commands PR

Shoulder rehab, triceps, and lots of coaching.

555 felt very smooth. I know I have more in me, and that's how I want to leave the last heavy bench before the meet. Knowing that I have an even bigger attempt in me for the platform makes me hungry.
Tuesday, March 1 - Supplemental

Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement, everybody. I'll be back better than ever. The rest will be just the ticket for me as I feel I've been getting overtrained in the deadlift. I'll bench at the state meet, and then get the surgery the following week.

Sunday, February 27 - Supplemental from Ryan

easily in a good suit 800+ right now
575-600 in the bench
725-750 DL

2100 being conservative

Sunday, February 27 - Supplemental from George

I hope the rest that you'll get from this little layoff John will give your elbows time to heal for squatting. I would love to see you train the squat and to see what your 3 lift total would be.

Sunday, February 27 - Supplemental from JTGUNZ

John,
I'm very sorry to hear about your injury. Do you recall what exercise you were doing when the tear occurred?

I got a hernia (sounds like the same as yours) from squatting almost 20 years ago. I did not have insurance at the time so I did not get it repaired. I wore a truss for a year and continued lifting. Being in my early 20s, it healed up by itself in a little over a year and I was lifting heavy again. But it was uncomfortable throughout the whole year. While I did not squat or deadlift, I did find that I was able to do seated leg presses as the position of the legs to the hips was such that it did not aggravate the hernia. I also found I could do heavy negatives with leg presses and not feel any discomfort.

The repair route is the way to go though. A friend of mine (former all American shot putter) had the surgery at age 38 a couple years ago and was good as new in 6 weeks

As hard as you've been hitting it, I'l bet Your body will enjoy the rest. You may want to ask your doctor what he thinks about wearing a truss for a short period of time when you're able to come back and deadlift again. I found that it kept the area around the hernia secure.

Rest up. You'll be back.

Saturday, February 26 - Supplemental

The Bad News: It's a hernia, and there's a hole in my abdominal wall that you can poke your finger through (not that I give anyone permission to do so, but you know what I mean).

The Good News: It's easy to repair. It will be stronger after recovery than a normal abdominal wall. I get the referral set up Monday and then I'll be in the hands of the hernia specialist.

More Good News: I'm cleared to bench for the time being with some precautions. I'll bench in the state meet and, depending on the surgery date, in Collinsville.

The Hard Part: Recovery will suck. Not lifting for three weeks will suck. Getting back into deadlifting will be frustrating. I'll need all of your support and help, oftentimes to keep me from getting too frustrated. The mental part will be a challenge.

The Promise: 733+ at WABDL Worlds in November at 259. World Record at 259 Master 40-46. 600+ bench press.

The Challenge: You guys racing to 700, you have a chance to catch the old man while my onward march is temporarily halted. I suggest you hurry the hell up and do your best while you have the chance. When I come back it's gonna be with a serious, serious vengeance. My shot at submaster world records has been interfered with and there's gonna be HELL to pay! If you don't catch me by August then watch my pull and despair.

Friday, February 25 - Supplemental from George

Hope all goes well John. You'll be back in no time. I thought i had a hernia when i was trying out for JV football in school. I had to go to a bunch of different doctors. They told me it turned out to be a varicose vein. Even if you happen to have surgery on it, it's a in&out patient surgery, if it's not in a very serious place. So you'll be back quicker than you think u will  GOOD LUCK

Friday, February 25 - Supplemental

The good news is that the suspicious area might have "asymmetrical muscle development" and an "unusual deposit of adipose tissue" (yeah, kinda gross) that makes it appear to be the beginnings of a hernia. No firm diagnosis yet, though.

Friday, February 25 - Supplemental from Jeff

John,

I know this is disappointing for you, but even in the worst case a hernia repair is quite simple and you should be pulling monster deadlifts again very soon. Maybe you can be a bench specialist for a few months and crack that 600 mark. Good luck.

Jeff

Friday, February 25 - Supplemental from Sidney

John,

Please bear with me I'm not use to posting in these things but I just wanted to drop you a note.

I happened to be looking in your Training Log when I spotted a potential set back that you're going through. If it is at all helpful that I will be praying for you. I hope that you will make with a quick return to your dead lifting & with favorable results form your medical team. Please use your head and train wisely so that no further set back(s) come your way and remember all of your lifting friends both close and far away will do the same. (Sorry for sounding like your mother but I care)

Sidney

Friday, February 25 - Supplemental from Ryan

Persevering through tough times is what determines the type of person we are.

I know what type of person you are.

We accept no outcome but victory. This is accomplished by never, ever giving up.

Maybe this is Gods way of giving me a chance to catch back up with you.

Ill call you tomorrow after work.

Much love.

Friday, February 25 - Supplemental from Blake

John, sorry to hear your situation. I don't really know much about hernias except straining yourself tends to cause them. Will taking it easy help it heal? Better to take a couple weeks off and finish with some good training before Collinsville. Even if you not 100% by April I'm sure you'll still put most of us to shame. I hope everything goes well. Be smart, rest will only make you come back stronger. My thoughts are with you.

Thursday, February 24 - Deadlift

BWT - 279.0

Today was devastating. I found out I have a possible hernia. The hernia specialist says it is a hernia . . . of course he would say that since he gets his money from cutting people open. A more conservative doctor who I trust a great deal says it's not clear that it's a hernia. In any case, knowing all this makes trying to deadlift a terrifying experience. 605 felt odd but it was fast. 715 wouldn't go, and I'm very sure it's mental. The good doctors told me what could happen with that much weight (thank you very much). So, deadlifting at Collinsville is very much up in the air for the time being. It's nice that my bench is going well, but believe me when I say that I'd rather have a bad rotator cuff to deal with. Bench is an okay lift to do, but deadlift is my lift. To have that lift possibly taken away, at least for awhile, is devastating, truly devastating.

It's been a long, long time since I've felt so crushed.
Tuesday, February 22 - Bench Press

BWT - 282.5

Thanks to Janne and Jeff for the handoffs, spots, and good advice.

Bench Press -

Thursday, February 17 - Deadlift

BWT - 279.7

Deadlift -
225x3
315x1
405x1
495x1
STRAPS UP (low on the shoulder)
585x1 Didn't feel right off the floor.
715x1 MISS
715x1 Normal strap setting. Better, but a MISS.
585x1 RAW

With my bodyweight at 280, the suit is just too tight. At Worlds I had no trouble getting down to the bar, hooking up, and going. Now, I barely get my fingers on the bar and then I have to work the hand onto the bar. Thus, I waste energy, air, and I lose form. I end up with very little speed from the suit off the floor.

Back is fried. I'll order a bigger suit tomorrow.

See, I'm still able to stink up the place from time to time. But for all my very good workouts, it shouldn't be a big disappointment to hit a wall from time to time.

We all had fun today, though.
Tuesday, February 15 - Bench Press

BWT - 284.0

My plan was to try Janne's drop-touch method with a lighter weight in my 52 this week. I wasn't sure how much I could do as my elbows were still achey.

Bench Press -
135x5
185x3
225x3
275x1
315x1
F6 52 on
365x3 Got a good touch on the 3rd rep.
405x1 Got it to touch on the 1st try!

Prior to today, the lightest I've touched with in the 52 was 475.

At this point my elbows were hurting again, so that was all. I'll try this in the 50 next week starting at 455.

Tried some close-grips, but my shoulder had some AC pain on the right side.

Shoulder rehab, abs, and home.
Monday, February 14 - Supplemental

I put the bar at or just below the knee since it's just above the knee that I get stuck. You should try to place the bar at or just below your sticking point. To tell you the truth, by the end of my workout I have very little left for these and I sometimes do them with much lighter weight than I had planned. I think this is okay since my heavy stiff-leg deadlifts also work lockouts. I'm going to start adding shrugs back into my program, too, since heavy shrugs (500+) really fry my traps.

Monday, February 14 - Supplemental from George

John where do u put the bar at when u do rack pulls? I put the bar at mid-shin level when i do them, i feel any higher is doing nothing for me, but just under knee level i can get up more weight but i feel i get side tracked with my form, and it does nothing to help me.

Sunday, February 13 - Supplemental

The rack wasn't wide enough. What we need is a fully adjustable competition rack, but that will have to wait until we have a good bench. So still no squats.

For squat assistance I would do:

box squats
front squats
pause squats
leg press

Pretty basic, but heavy.

Sunday, February 13 - Supplemental from George

John have u been able to do any squat work in that wide rack your gym just got? Also what assistant exercises would you do for squats if u trained for a 3 lift meet?

Thursday, February 10 - Deadlift

BWT - 280.4

Deadlift -
225x3
315x1
405x1
495x1
STRAPS UP . . . OMG is the Max DL tight at 280!!

Cardio -
BIKE x 20mn

May I go home now, please?
Wednesday, February 9 - Supplemental

I used to train right through the pain . . . until a rotator cuff went out on me and I had to stop benching for six months. I learned the hard way to walk away and recover when the body says so.

Wednesday, February 9 - Supplemental from Blake

Your program is so simple, yet clearly effective. Beautiful. Lift heavy weights once a week. If it hurts stop, and rest. I wonder if i could ever manage such self control??? Probably not.

Tuesday - February 8 - Bench Press

BWT - 279.6

Bench Press -
135x5
185x3
225x3
275x1

At 315 my right elbow was feeling very irritated, so that was it for heavy benching today. I'll rest the elbow up and hit it hard next week.

Close-grip Bench Press
245x3
265x3
285x3

Shoulder rehab, cardio for 20min.
Friday, February 4 - Supplemental from Eric

Hahaha, sing it brother! Long live Old School!

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental

For anyone interested in my training methods, there are two key points to keep in mind:

1. The only "bands" I have come from Office Max; and,

2. My only "chain" is on a bicycle.

In these days of overcomplicated training programs, I hope I can be living proof that you don't have to get fancy in your training methods to have decent lifts. Simple, Basic, Heavy: it worked in the old days. It still works today.

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental

10 seconds? I thought it was more like 5. My suit is VERY tight. But Blake's has to be tighter by far.

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental from Blake

not to mention the limited amount of time you have until you pass out. If i don't get down and get the bar up to my knees in about 10 seconds I'll pass out. right john.

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental

. . . and getting the breathing right. That's probably the hardest part. I don't mind seeing stars at the top of the pull, but passing out is something I try to avoid.

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental from Eric

Ernie has me working in my canvas on deads now. I do pull sumo, but still, in the canvas, it is tough getting down the bar, so I know what you mean. He has me go with no briefs so it is not as tight, and wants me to do it just like my squat. I do some conventional pulls for assistance work, I can imagine how tough it is to get down to the bar in a really tight suit.

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental

Yes, same one I wore at your meet. My extra pounds make it a little harder to get down to the bar. The weight came up easy both times. It was just that on the first try I didn't get the bar deep enough into my hand. That's what these singles are for: to practice the movement and make it second nature.

I do the rack squats and rack lockouts RAW.

You saw how tough it is for me to get down to the bar. One of my new lifters said it looks like I "attack the bar" when I make that last little dive to reach the bar.

Friday, February 4 - Supplemental from Eric

Were you in your tight suit for this workout?

Thursday, February 3 - Deadlift

BWT - 276.9

Wednesday, February 2 - Supplemental from Randy

John,
Fantastic! Congrats it looks like 600 will be here soon. See you Sunday.

Randy

Wednesday, February 2 - Supplemental

Pauses will be another story, but I've got time. I've decided to bench at the state meet since I can only deadlift at Collinsville (Gus wants me to judge bench).

Wednesday, February 2 - Supplemental from Roger

Congrats on the 585#! That's great. Puts you in the lead, by far, on the 600# race. I think the rest of us are still trying to touch with something "lockoutable". Only 15 more pounds at a meet, means a case of Samuel Adams.

Tuesday - February 1 - Bench Press

BWT - 276.6

Most of Old School Squad was there tonight . . . and that's alot of lifters. Euro Squad was there, as was Slav Squad (that's Yuri's squad . . . no name yet, but it just came to me).

Thursday, January 27 - Deadlift

BWT - 276.2

Brought in the old MAX DL today with the longer straps since I wasn't sure anyone would be able to get the straps up on the newer one.

405x1
495x1
STRAPS UP
585x1
675x1

The old suit doesn't give me as much pop off the floor . . . well, duh . . . the straps are 3 inches longer. I also need to work on speed. The lift was strong but definitely not fast enough. I think I'm going to go back to rack squats every week. I can't rack pull worth a shit after rack squats; that's why I've been alternating them from week to week. But I know that the speed I get from rack squats does more for me than the rack pulls. So, back to what worked for Worlds, and I'll just get the best I can get with the pulls with what's left after rack squats.

Stiff-Leg Deadlift -
585x3

Rack Lockouts -
725x2 Missed the 3rd rep. But better than last week; I couldn't even get one. 725 for 3 reps would match my best ever.

Jan. 8 - APF/AAPF Windy City Ironman - Niles, Illinois

Meet Day was an off day for me, but thanks to the great lifters, the enthusiastic crowd, and help from Nick and Yuri I was able to put together a good performance.

BWT - 268.8

Bench:
1st - 479.5 GOOD Felt heavier than it should have. Shirt not set?
2nd - 523.5 MISS Shirt definitely wasn't set. Drifted at the touch.
3rd - 529 GOOD Shirt was set. Better execution.

Deadlift:
1st - 606.2 GOOD A warmup to see how my back was holding up.
2nd - 705.2 GOOD Slightly in front at take-off. Pulled in for tough lockout.
3rd - 710.7 GOOD Perfect execution. Almost lost grip on the left. Wrap in the future.

For the state meet, I still haven't decided what I'll do. I'll keep experimenting with squats to find a way to train them without aggravating my elbows. Just a 560 or so squat could ensure an 1800 total. If I can't get the squat to work and my deadlift is going well, I may do a token squat, a token bench, and take a shot at the APF American Submaster Deadlift Record which now stands at 738.5. My target single for that week is 755.

However, if we get a good turnout from the team at the state meet, I'll most likely just coach our lifters since it will be the full-meet debut for many of them. I could always try for the American record in June since I think we'll have more lifters entered in the March meet than the June meet.

We shall see.
Friday, December 31, 2004 - Deadlift

BWT - 273.5

I thought I needed this workout to guage my strength for the meet next week. This is unusual, having such a short time between meets for me. In retrospect, I guess I should have just rested . . . oh well, live and learn.

IMPE closed early today so we had a noon start. More misgivings. I never pull so early in the day, and I usually don't eat within three hours of pulling. But I had to eat breakfast. Having a full stomach messes with my form. Also, my back is stiff from heavy benches the day before.

But enough excuses and whining. On to the workout.

Deadlift -
225x3
315x1
405x1
495x1
STRAPS UP
605x1
705x1

Sloppy and awkward. It was hard to get to the bar and felt like I was being pulled forward . . . probably the full stomach. The bar seemed to stop at the knees, and Jeff said it was out in front of me. But then I muscled it to lockout. The good news is that this shows I have the strength to muscle a big pull up when I lose form.

So, for next week I'll go conservative and treat the deadlift as a workout. My main focus is on trying for a bench record anyway; can't set DL records at this meet. And I'm lifting for pledges to help tsunami victims, so I want to make damn sure the deadlift is at least over 700.

1st - 606.2
2nd - 705.2
3rd - 733 for a PR

Not sure what happened, but the bar slipped to one side on me. Anyway, it's the lightest that has been touchable with the 50.

F6 52 Back On
475x1 w/Pause and Rack Commands

Very easy. I hadn't done pauses in ages; they make a HUGE difference.

So I'll probably open in the 52 with 473.7 or 479.5.
2nd will be in the 50 with 523.5 for the Submaster record.
3rd . . . who knows? 529 or 534.5. Just depends on 2nd.

If I can get my weight just high enough for 308, my opener will be a record.

Wednesday, December 22 - Light Bench

BWT - 271.0

Shoulder rehab and triceps.

Next Wednesday will be my last heavy bench before Niles. Good pause with 525, another single with 560~575, then boards.

Probably open at 523.5 at Niles for a State Record, and then go from there.
Monday, December 20, 2004 - Supplemental from Blake

Damn!!!!!!!!! I can't believe how far you guys have come in the last few months on the bench. Janne already up close to 100 pounds over what i remember him doing in the DD in August. John at 550!!! God damn. Illini Powerlifting is well on its way to making a BIG name for itself.

Monday, December 20, 2004 - Supplemental from Ryan

Damn.

3 lifters with-in striking distance of 600.

That is amazing.

Good job guys.

To bad you cant squat John you could post a hell of a total.

David made me do 28 reps of tricep pressdowns with the stack.

Janne benched incredibly today . . . couldn't touch with 575 in his new shirt, but blew it up. We are closing in on 600!

This progress wouldn't be possible without Illini Powerlifting . . .

BW - 273.2

Just did shoulder rehab today to give my shoulder a break. I'll bench heavy on Sunday.
Thursday, December 9 - Deadlift

BW - 271.0

I won't be able to continue benching on Wednesdays as it really seems to leave me sore in the back and run down for deadlifting on Thursdays.

Deadlift -
225x2
315x1
405x1
495x1
625x1

Rack Squats -
725x3 Surprisingly easy considering how heavy the pulls felt.

No elbow pain after Rack Squats.

Tried some sets of regular squats. Elbow pain as soon as I had 225 on the bar, so squating at the state meet is out of the question. I could train squat with a safety bar, but the problem would remain when doing a squat in a meet. My elbows would be throbbing halfway through warmups, and I'd still have to bench.

Oh, well . . .
Wednesday, December 8 - Bench Press

WABDL Worlds - Reno, Nevada

Weighed in just a hair over 270. Moronically tripped on the escalator just hours before I was to lift and bled like a stuck hog. Dai stopped the bleeding. Fortunately no damage to anything other than skin. Ryan dressed up my knee for deadlifts and onto the platform I went.

1st - 628.2 This was nothing more than a final warmup.
2nd - 727.5 Speed was awesome. This was easier than 725 in the gym.
3rd - 744 Missed this. The bar appeared to rotate on me such that it was pressed in hard above the right knee but not in contact on the left side. Thus, all momentum was lost. Good speed off the floor, though.

2nd in Submaster and Open. Not bad. I even made Holloway nervous.

I'm not sure about my upcoming meet schedule. I will certainly do the April 2nd Collinsville meet. The APF Illinois State meet has been moved to March 12-13, which coincides with the week of my heaviest pull leading up to Collinsville. I may enter the state meet to bench and also basically do my final deadlift workout on the platform, going 760 for an APF American record at Submaster (currently set at 733).

My plan in Collinsville is to set a World Record, either at 259 or 275. I will incorporate cardio into my program while keeping my current diet so as to let my weight fall where it wants to go. If, as I anticipate, this will bring me down to 260 or less by February, I'll go 259. If my weight remains 265 or more, I'll simply remain in 275s. I absolutely will not reduce calories for the sake of making a lower weight class. I've done it before and it kills my lifts. My body just doesn't respond well to caloric reduction.

I'll continue with a singles-based program as this has been working splendidly for me. However, since the cycle for Collinsville will be 19 weeks (beginning Thanksgiving week), I will incorporate at two off weeks into the program, as well as two weeks of (relatively) light pulls so as to avoid overtraining and injury.

My target pull progression will look like this (keeping flexible, though):

WK 1: no pull
WK 2: 605
WK 3: 615
WK 4: 625
WK 5: 635
WK 6: rest
WK 7: 655
WK 8: 665
WK 9: 675
WK 10: 685
WK 11: 700
WK 12: 715
WK 13: 730
WK 14: 660
WK 15: 745
WK 16: 760
Wk 17: 660
WK 18: rest
WK 19: meet

If all goes well, the Submaster AND Open World Records at 259 will be mine.
